ETIAS Launch in 2025: Mandatory Travel Authorization for 1.4 Billion Visitors to the EU

In a major update to travel regulations, the European Union will require 1.4 billion citizens from over 60 countries to obtain an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) permit before entering the 30 EU/Schengen Area countries starting mid-2025. This new regulation aims to enhance security by pre-screening travelers from visa-exempt countries.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is a travel authorization system that the European Union has been developing since 2016. Similar to existing systems in the United States, Canada, and New Zealand, ETIAS aims to improve security by providing information on visitors before they arrive. Following Brexit, the United Kingdom is also working on a comparable system.

Who Will Need ETIAS?

By mid-2025, citizens from over 60 countries that currently enjoy visa-free travel to the EU will need to apply for ETIAS. This includes travelers from nations such as the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. These travelers will no longer be able to enter the EU/Schengen Area for short stays without this authorization.

How to Apply for ETIAS

Applying for ETIAS is designed to be straightforward and efficient. Applicants will be able to complete the process online via the official ETIAS website or the ETIAS mobile app, which is expected to be launched soon. The application process will require:

  • A valid passport scan

  • A recent photo

  • Answering several basic questions

The entire process is anticipated to take around ten minutes. Once approved, the ETIAS authorization will be valid for multiple entries over a period of three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

Why ETIAS?

The primary objective of ETIAS is to enhance the security of EU countries. By requiring pre-travel authorization, the EU can better manage and monitor who enters its borders. This pre-screening process is expected to help in identifying potential security threats, preventing illegal immigration, and protecting public health.

Delays in ETIAS Implementation

Initially scheduled to launch in January 2021, the ETIAS system has faced several delays. The current launch date is set for the first half of 2025, with the Entry/Exit system expected to be operational by Autumn 2024. The delays have been attributed to several factors:

  • Development issues by the eu-LISA agency, which is responsible for the operational management of ETIAS

  • Member States failing to meet their tasks related to the Frontex responsibilities

  • Delays in developing the necessary Carrier and Traveller Support Tools

Impact on Travelers

Travelers planning to visit the EU/Schengen Area from mid-2025 will need to factor in the additional step of obtaining ETIAS authorization. This new requirement is particularly important for frequent travelers and those planning last-minute trips, as it adds a mandatory step before travel.

Conclusion

The introduction of ETIAS marks a significant shift in travel regulations for the EU. While it may add an extra step in the travel planning process, the primary aim is to bolster security and safety within the EU/Schengen Area. Travelers are advised to stay informed about the application process and requirements to ensure smooth travel experiences starting in mid-2025.
