ETIAS - Everything you need to know

The ETIAS, or European Travel Information and Authorisation System, is a new system set to come into operation in 2024 that is designed to make traveling to European countries much easier for travelers. The ETIAS is also designed to help travelers avoid lines at border control points where passports and visas are checked, making travel hassle-free for those who’ve obtained a digital permit. Find out what the ETIAS does, how it works, and why you need to apply.

What is ETIAS?

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a new electronic visa waiver that will be required for all non-EU nationals traveling to Schengen countries as of 2024.

ETIAS is similar to the US Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) in that it is an online application that must be completed before travel. However, unlike ESTA, which is only required for citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries, all non-EU nationals will need to obtain an ETIAS visa regardless of their country of origin.

The ETIAS visa will allow travelers to enter any of the 26 Schengen countries for short-term stays of up to 90 days within 180 days. It will also grant holders freedom of movement within the Schengen Area, meaning they can travel between countries without the need to apply for separate visas.

While the ETIAS visa waiver will not replace the need for a passport, it will streamline the process of applying for a Schengen visa and make it easier for travelers to visit multiple countries within Europe.

Why ETIAS?

ETIAS is a new electronic system that will be introduced to travelers who want to visit European countries. It will become mandatory in 2024.

The purpose of ETIAS is to strengthen security in the Schengen area and streamline travel procedures. ETIAS will make it easier and faster for legitimate travelers to enter the Schengen area, while also deterring and detecting irregular immigration.

Who needs to get ETIAS?

All travelers who are currently exempt from the visa requirement will need to obtain an ETIAS authorisation before traveling to the Schengen area, with a few exceptions. This includes citizens of EFTA and EEA countries, as well as those holding a valid national long-stay visa or residence permit.

Other exemption categories include diplomats, military personnel, and other officials with special status, as well as humanitarian workers and individuals in transit.

How do I get it?

There are three easy steps to apply for ETIAS authorisation. First, applicants need to complete an online application form here with personal details and passport information. Secondly, they will need to pay the processing fee. Lastly, once the application is approved, travelers will receive a confirmation with their ETIAS authorisation attached.

Applicants will need to have a valid passport from one of the 60 eligible countries to apply for ETIAS authorisation. The entire process is electronic, so no documents need to be mailed in or submitted in person.

ETIAS authorisation is valid for 3 years or until the traveler’s passport expires, whichever comes first. Travelers will need to reapply for ETIAS if their circumstances change, such as their address or citizenship status.
