New European Travel Rules: How ETIAS Will Affect Your Trip in 2025

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is a new electronic travel authorization system introduced by the EU to pre-screen travelers from countries that do not need a visa to enter Europe. The system is similar to the U.S. ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) and aims to improve border security by checking travelers before they arrive.

Once approved, ETIAS will be valid for up to three years or until your passport expires—whichever comes first. With an ETIAS, you can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit purposes.

Why is ETIAS Being Introduced?

The main goal of ETIAS is to enhance security and improve border management across Europe. The system will allow authorities to screen travelers before they enter the Schengen Area, identifying any potential security risks in advance.

By requiring this travel authorization, the EU aims to:
โœ… Strengthen border security
โœ… Prevent illegal immigration
โœ… Enhance the safety of travelers and residents

This means that, while ETIAS adds an extra step before travel, it is meant to keep European travel safe and efficient for everyone.

Which Countries Will Require ETIAS?

If you're traveling to any of the 30 countries in the Schengen Area, you’ll need an ETIAS authorization:

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท France
๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Spain
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Italy
๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Germany
๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Netherlands
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท Greece
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ Switzerland
๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น Austria
๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น Portugal
๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช Sweden
๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด Norway
๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฎ Finland
... and many more.

In addition, microstates like Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City will also require ETIAS authorization.

How to Apply for ETIAS

The ETIAS application process is quick and simple, taking about 10 minutes to complete online. Here’s what you’ll need:

โœ” A valid passport
โœ” An email address to receive confirmation
โœ” A debit or credit card to pay the €7 application fee (free for travelers under 18 and over 70)

Most applications are approved within minutes, but it’s recommended to apply at least a few days before your trip in case additional processing is needed. Once approved, your ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport—no need to print anything!

Will ETIAS Complicate Travel to Europe?

For most travelers, ETIAS will just be a small extra step before departure, similar to other electronic travel authorizations used worldwide. It won’t replace visas—if you already need a visa for Europe, ETIAS does not apply to you.

As long as you apply ahead of time and ensure your passport is valid, ETIAS will be a smooth process that allows you to continue enjoying visa-free travel to Europe.

Final Thoughts

ETIAS is set to launch in May 2025, and while it introduces a new requirement for travelers, it’s designed to make European travel safer and more secure. If you’re planning a trip to Europe, make sure to check if you need ETIAS and apply online before your departure.
