The UK Embassy in Madrid has reassured British citizens residing in Spain that their "Green Certificates," issued by the Extranjería office or the National Police office, remain valid and carry significant exemptions from upcoming EU travel regulations.
Green Certificates are essential documents for British nationals living in Spain, affirming their rights to reside and work under the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement. These certificates come in two formats: an A4-sized document or a credit-card-sized piece of paper.
According to the embassy's latest announcement, holders of these certificates will be exempt from the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), slated for implementation by the EU in 2024 and 2025. Furthermore, these certificates ensure that UK nationals do not require visas for short stays and are not bound by the 90/180-day Schengen Area rule.
While the Green Certificate provides substantial benefits, the embassy advises British citizens to consider exchanging it for a Spanish Foreign Identity Card (TIE) for administrative convenience, although this exchange is not mandatory. The embassy stresses that regardless of the type of documentation held, British nationals' rights under the Withdrawal Agreement remain unchanged.
Statista reports that the British expatriate population in Spain peaked at 313,975 in 2022. The most preferred regions include Andalusia with 92,180 residents, followed by Valencia (87,700), the Canary Islands (29,631), Catalonia (24,689), and the Balearic Islands (19,569).
Spain continues to attract millions of British tourists annually, with 15.1 million visiting in 2022 alone, underscoring the enduring appeal and strong ties between the two nations.
The recent guidance from the UK Embassy in Spain provides clarity and reassurance for British citizens navigating post-Brexit residency and travel regulations. Holding a Green Certificate ensures seamless mobility and residency rights, minimizing bureaucratic hurdles. As regulations evolve, staying informed and possibly considering the exchange to a TIE card can further streamline interactions with Spanish authorities.
For British nationals in Spain, maintaining updated documentation and understanding these exemptions are key to enjoying uninterrupted residency and travel in the region.
